Hi There, We are travelling from India to NZ next month. Even though all of our tours are booked, just want to get clarification regarding car seat. We know it is must to use a car seat for toddlers in New Zealand. My question is, if we are booking a taxi or uber during our stay in New Zealand, do we need to BYO baby car seat? Do do the drivers have one on request? Its not worth to buy a new one just for a few time use.
Hi Smitha, car seat is not mandatory for Uber or taxi or any other rideshare service in New Zealand. I can guarantee you this because, I drive Uber in Christchurch. As per the NZTA exception, child restraint not required in passenger service vehicle (eg taxi, shuttle, bus, rideshare) when no appropriate child restraint is available. However, I do recommend using child seat if you do have one. There are a few pawn shops where you can get one for a cheap price. consider that option too. Also if you provide notice to taxi companies, they might bring a child car seat.
What Hardeep mentioned is true. You don’t need a baby seat while travelling on either taxi or Uber. When our baby was born in Christchurch Women’s hospital, we used to travel by booking Ola (I think Ola is stopped in NZ). I just hold my baby in my laps. But this is not recommended. If you have a baby seat, it ensures more safety.
